Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has returned from a hip injury in outstanding form, drawing widespread praise for a string of commanding performances that have strengthened his status as Mikel Arteta’s first-choice left-back.
Calafiori delivered one of his best displays of the season in Thursday’s 2–0 win over Brentford. Playing the full 90 minutes, the Italian was a dominant presence at both ends of the pitch, winning 9 of 11 duels, making three clearances and four recoveries, and completing two of three dribbles. He also registered two shots on target, prompting supporters to label his all-action performance as “not real.”
Teammate Bukayo Saka highlighted Calafiori’s composure and reliability, saying the defender’s one-on-one strength gives the squad “huge confidence.”
His recent form follows an impactful cameo in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, where he came off the bench to provide a crucial assist. Days earlier, he had been withdrawn at half-time in the Premier League clash with Chelsea as Arteta sought to avoid a potential red card after an early booking.
Despite his impressive rise, Calafiori’s disciplinary record remains a concern. He is currently on four Premier League yellow cards and faces a one-match suspension if he collects another within the next six league fixtures.
Nevertheless, the 23-year-old is expected to be available for Arsenal’s trip to Aston Villa on Saturday as the Gunners look to maintain their strong defensive form.
